MICHAEL VAN GERWEN lifted the roof of the Evenementenhal in Venray on Saturday night with a commanding 6-2 victory over Mensur Soljovic. The win sees the world number one remain on-course to defend his Dutch title and claim a fourth successive European Tour event. Van Gerwen didn’t let his home support down producing the performance of the third round. The Dutchman averaged 103.09, hit four maximums and wrapped up his victory in style hitting a 11-dart leg in Leg 8. Dave Chisnall held his nerve to win a final leg decider against Jelle Klaasen. The opening three legs of the match went with the throw only for the next four legs to all go against the throw to leave the score at 4-3 to Klaasen. Chisnall held his throw in Leg 8 to level the scores up and then recorded a 12-dart leg in Leg 9 to move within one leg of victory. Klaasen bounced back to the delight of his home support to win Leg 10, but Chisnall silence the crowd in the final leg of the match to set-up a mouth-water third round match against Michael van Gerwen. Terry Jenkins opened his Dutch Darts Masters account with a 6-3 win over the Dutchman Jerry Hendriks. Having lost the first leg with the throw Jenkins didn’t let that affect his darts, winning the next four legs on the bounce. Hendricks took the sixth leg only for Jenkins to put himself one leg away from victory by winning Leg 7. Leg 8 saw Hendriks record his second maximum of the match and claw one leg back, but the Bull went on to secure the victory in Leg 9 to set-up a third round match against the number five seed Brendan Dolan. Mervyn King stamped his authority on the Dutch Darts Masters averaging 97.4 in his 6-1 victory over Ricky Evans. King raced into a commanding 5-0 lead thanks to some smart finishing and then secured the victory in Leg 7 and book his place in the third round. King takes on Simon Whitlock on Sunday afternoon after Wizard brushed aside Max Hopp 6-3 in Saturday’s evening session. The opening two legs of the match went with the throw only for Whitlock to win the next three legs including a 12-dart leg in Leg 3. Hopp held his throw in Leg 6 to pull the score back to 4-2, but Whitlock bounced straight back in Leg 7 to put himself one leg away from the third round. A determined Hopp won Leg 8, but it wasn’t his day with Whitlock wrapping up the victory in ninth leg. Saturday afternoon’s session was an afternoon of shocks with both Vincent van der Voort and Stephen Bunting both being eliminated. Van der Voort, who had the backing of a passionate home crowd was sent crashing out in a last leg decider against the youngster Nathan Aspinall, whilst Stephen Bunting was beaten by another young gun, Josh Payne 6-4. Nathan Aspinall tried his best to silence the Van der Voort support winning three of the first four legs, but Leg 5 and 6 went the way of the Dutchman to level the scores at 3-3. The next four legs all went against the throw, but with Van der Voort having the throw in the deciding leg, the crowd once again tried to rally their man. It wasn’t to be though with Aspinall recording a 14-dart leg to seal the victory and set-up a third round match against Justin Pipe, who earlier had beaten Rowby-John Rodriguez 6-5. Josh Payne capitalised on some poor finishing from Stephen Bunting to book his place in the third round. The Bullet never really hit top gear, but you can’t take anything away from Payne, with the youngster hitting 40% of his doubles to set-up a third round match against Michael Smith, who averaged 96.86 in his 6-1 win over John Michael. The opening match of the afternoon session saw Ian White produce a solid game of darts to overcome Jeffrey de Zwaan 6-4, while Steve Beaton beat Gary Stone 6-5 to set-up a third round match against Kyle Anderson, who overcame the number four seed Peter Wright 6-2. Elsewhere on Saturday afternoon, Jamie Caven inflicted a 6-0 defeat on John Henderson, Kim Huybrechts overcame William O’Connor 6-5 and Brendan Dolan beat the Dutchman Christian Kist 6-1.
