ELLE KLAASEN, Christian Kist, Jeffrey de Zwaan and Jerry Hendriks delighted the home crowd at the Dutch Darts Masters with victories on the opening afternoon of the PDC European Tour event in Venray. Former Lakeside Champion Klaasen lifted the roof of the Evenementenhal in Venray with a 6-4 win over Alan Norris, the European Tour debutant. The Dutchman raced into a commanding 3-0 lead and then went on to seal the victory with a 94.72 average, hitting five maximums in the process as he set up a mouth-watering second round match against in-form Dave Chisnall. Another former Lakeside Champion Kist, one of the four Host Nation Qualifiers who booked their place in the event on Thursday night, was a 6-4 winner over Spanish ace Cristo Reyes. Reyes pulled back from 3-1 down to level before checkouts of 92 and 113 put the Dutchman through to the last 32, where he now plays Brendan Dolan. Emerging youngster de Zwaan landed four 180s and a 138 finish as he overcame Joe Cullen 6-3 to move through to a second round meeting with Ian White. Jerry Hendriks completed a quartet of Dutch victories on the opening day as he defeated Wes Newton 6-3 in the night's final contest, pulling clear from three-all as his surge to victory included legs of 13 and 14 darts. Austrian ace Mensur Suljovic set up a second round clash with top seed and world number one Michael van Gerwen with a superb comeback against European Tour debutant Jonny Clayton. The Welsh qualifier took out finishes of 96, 102 and a 12-darter as he raced through the first three legs and added another 12-dart finish to take a 4-2 lead. Suljovic, though, landed two 12-darters of his own as he claimed the next four legs without reply to seal his spot in round two. Youngster Josh Payne overcame Wayne Jones 6-3 to set up a tasty second round meeting with Stephen Bunting, having opened his tie with a 177 before adding five 180s in victory against the former European Championship finalist. Ireland's William O'Connor now plays former Dutch Darts Masters champion Kim Huybrechts, following his 6-2 win over Brett Claydon. Number two seed Michael Smith takes on Greek qualifier John Michael, who edged out Daryl Gurney 6-5 in a dramatic 11-leg contest, while David Pallett took out finishes of 124 and 126 as he came from 4-3 down to win 6-4 against Dimitri Van den Bergh, finishing legs of 12, 13 and 12 darts to set up a tie with James Wade. John Henderson, the German Darts Masters runner-up in Munich two months ago, began his challenge in Venray with a 6-4 win over Prakash Jiwa as he moved through to take on John Henderson. Max Hopp held his nerve to overcome Gerwyn Price 6-5 in the opening match of the evening session at the Dutch Darts Masters. The German youngster opened proceedings with a 15-dart leg and then went on to break the Price throw with a 153 checkout as he extended his lead to 3-0 before the Welshman pulled back to 4-3. However, the remaining legs all went with the throw to see Hopp progress and set up a second round clash against top Australian Simon Whitlock. Gary Stone set-up a second round match against Steve Beaton following his 6-3 win over Dean Winstanley, who took two of the opening three legs only to see the Scot take four in a row to turn the game in his favour before sealing victory with a 99.86 average. Nathan Aspinall edged out Jamie Robinson in a deciding leg to book his place in the second round against Dutch star Vincent van der Voort. The youngster raced into a commanding 4-1 lead, and after Robinson cut the gap to one leg a 123 checkout moved Aspinall to the brink of victory at 5-3. However, Robinson again hit back as he took the next two to take the contest al the way, but Aspinall finished double ten to claim victory in leg 11. Rowby-John Rodriguez made short work of Davyd Venken as a 6-3 win over the Belgian qualifier set the Austrian youngster up for a clash against Justin Pipe. Ricky Evans - another former World Youth Championship runner-up - overcame Darren Webster by the same scoreline, averaging 103 and taking out 139 to seal a victory which sets up a second round meeting with Mervyn King. Australian ace Kyle Anderson set up a tasty second round meeting with world number five Peter Wright with a 6-2 win over Belgian debutant Kenny Neyes, who never recovered from losing the game's opening five legs. The £115,000 tournament is being held from June 5-7 at the Evenementenhal in Venray, with the top 16 seeded players entering the fray in Saturday's second round, which is split across two sessions. Ticket information for the Dutch Darts Masters European Tour event can be seen at www.pdc-europe.tv , with any remaining tickets on sale at the Evenementenhal in Venray.
